The Dunfermline New City Assembly
Join us in creating a vibrant future for Dunfermline together.

The New City
The Dunfermline New City Assembly is a new initiative about the future of Dunfermline, and we want you to be part of it. The Electoral Reform Society Scotland and Fife Council are working in partnership with local people, community groups and institutions, to bring together a Citizens’ Assembly which can help to set the agenda and shape plans for the city in the years ahead.
A Citizens’ Assembly is a group of citizens who are selected in the style of a jury. The aim is to secure a diversity of people who are broadly representative of the electorate across a range of characteristics. Together, they learn about important and relevant issues, and feed in their own ideas. Then, participants come up with a plan and proposals for Dunfermline which can be taken forward, working with the council.

Dunfermline Declaration
We want to raise awareness of this exciting project and develop engagement with the city as a whole. As part of this process, we brought together a cross-section of groups and individuals who are engaged in their areas to construct the following declaration.
“The people best placed to make the decisions about the future of Dunfermline are the people who live here. People like you. That is why we are supporting a Citizens’ Assembly for the city. It will bring together a group of people, drawn from the public, who are representative of all backgrounds. This will be an exciting opportunity to learn, to discuss and then to set out big ideas for Dunfermline.”
“We know that it is easy to feel powerless, and that things often happen to us, rather than with us. We know that there are lots of pressures on our daily lives. But it is also true that when we make our voices heard, we can change things for the better. This project is a chance to reconnect people with power. It is about fostering the knowledge of our communities so that they can be involved in making decisions about the place we are proud to call home.”
We are inviting you to sign this. In doing so, you will be part of the public launch of the project. We want every local group to be strengthened by this process – and to show that we can successfully bring people closer to decision-making and power closer to our communities.
